www.digg.com
That's the origin of the DIGG Alliance, for anybody who isn't familiar with the history. I'm told it's a news website frequently by those with careers in the Info Tech field - I'll take their word for it, never been to the site.
An article posted in late January about Inselkampf.com was what led to a massive player-surge on the server; DIGG went from 300 to 1200 members, and Empire gained several hundred that were turned away from DIGG. It was a considerable influx - I don't have the graphs handy, but literally overnight, almost 1500 new players (aka, 3000 new islands) appeared.
Given the current scarcity of islands, DIGG has held this tactic as an ace in the hole for peacetime. Indeed, I sat at the table that discussed it and pounded out the strategy. The general idea is to give DIGG members 1-2 weeks notice to build several coloships, then hit the front page of www.digg.com, and rush the 1-2 oceans that would be predicted to be opened up.
The practice of posting websites to www.digg.com to create an influx of visitors is commonly referred to as the "DIGG Effect".
At present, it is still in the "wait until the time is right" stage. It was also a defensive mechanism, in the event the war with E|S went badly, to attempt to distract them from taking defended DIGG islands and divert their focus to undefended 1-pt islands in new oceans.
I should be tipped off with some advanced-notice when DIGG moves to actually implement this strategy to open new oceans. Assuming some on Staff are still loyal, I should have more than the 1-2 week notice that the general membership receives.
I share this because it presents a new opportunity for an "Operation: Europa" effort. I maintain roughly 20 coloships in port. With 72 islands, all I need to do is halt cat production, and I can churn out an additional 5 coloships a day. I can only assume it is much the same situation for anyone ranking in the Top 50 or so.
However, we have many players here who may be a bit more "eager" with their coloships, and not maintain such reserves.
While I am not going to take the role of a "policy advocate", I simply wanted to make the "Bellwhether's" here aware of the situation, and the possibility for a 2nd Europa campaign. A concerted effort for colony ship stockpiles would obviously be a prerequisite.
Thoughts? Questions?
