The story has 108 diggs after being submitted for 4 hours. Obviously not everyone in digg is following the lead on this one, although in 20 hours (allow for all timezones) we will find out.
Generally the older the story the less likely it is to succeed.

As a digg.com regular, can you tell us if 108 in 4 hours is "good" or not, digital?

Its pretty bad to be honest. If digg [alliance] is as organised as I thought it was then it should have easily been promoted to the front page (as of posting the previous post it wasn't).
Its had another 28 diggs in ~ 2 hours. Pretty appalling really considering the US time zones should have kicked in by now.
Generally digg tends to surge 2-3 times a day. Once in the morning, once at lunchtime and then a semi push in the evening taking into effect the fact that people are at work during the day and then spend time with their families. Much the same way that this forum dies at the weekends.
Roughly only 28% of digg members have voted for the story. Unless there's a huge surge in 48 hours the threats over really.

Still on front page with 500 diggs, it appears that there are more than one submissions which I wasn't aware off.

o24, o25, o33 are heavy "benefactors" of islands, according to early Steven Hills results.
Nothing in o43 or o52.

Ok, got what going on now... This goes beyond just recruiting new members to DIGG, rather a way to bring new people in who can then be colonised when they get bored and disappear in two weeks: hence the colo competition.
Grover234 pushed a similar concept on .co.uk where players were encouraged to create accounts with any email address they could get their hands on, and then mark the account for deletion creating lots of unowned islands and hopefully force a new ocean to open. Don't think it worked as well as he would have liked though.

DIGG's membership gates are wide open right now. They're taking in anyone referencing the digg.com article.
In unrelated news, I need a crash-course in how to set up a proxy to mask my IP, preferably via IGM, and preferably ASAP.

Google anonymous proxy server and you will find heaps of proxies you can browse through. I've used this one in the past to fool Google I was browsing from the US to test a clients google ads. www.the-cloak.com/
