I've sent some, probably not enough to buy off Mexico though...but who wants Mexico when you have SOL - the sunshine of your life?

Ugh. I saw on the main page that Sol had a post in "I want your money". In my half-asleep morning oblivion, I just grumbled, "What the hell? She wants my money now too? What kind of racket are these guys running?!?!". I need coffee... You need more sleep I really wish I could send some money. Today I got offered an internship at a law firm downtown, practically a full time job...and he wants to pay me $100 a weeeek!!!!! That's $2.50 an hour...pfft...I can get way more by picking strawberries in the south for $4.50 lol and I'd least I'd go home with some dignity and strawberries!

Don't they have a minimum wage in the US? Heck I thought it was a first world country. ;D In the UK the minimum wage is around £6, or about $12US per hour. Things do cost more here though!

Minimum wage in the US varies by state. In my state for example I believe it's currently $6.25. Until this year though it was only $5.15. It's supposed to be up to $7.25 by July 2009. California on the other hand is $7.50 now and will be $8 in July 2009. Internships don't have to pay minimum wage though. In fact, they don't have to pay you at all.

Yes some studying related job practices don't pay anything here either. You ought to be grateful for the experience that you can add to your cv. And guess what, you don't get to practice, you just end up doing all the shitwork usually. But getting a first real job those practices may be essential.

Ah, so it's like "work experience" then?
Would they pay more if you weren't a Mexican?
Serious question.

lol They would pay me more if I wasn't Mexican? Most likely...in the US if a man gets paid $1, a woman gets paid $.70 for the same work. So...I'm a female mexican...what would I be worth? $.25? This is a full time job! 40 hours a week, answering phones and telling clients about what files they're missing and answering questions about their cases, filing things, mailing things, going to the bank to deposit checks for lazy lawyers, making letters for them to sign and send to some client. This suggests I have to know all the cases pretty well to come up with proper answers and to write letters to insurance companies and things like that. So practically, the lawyer just shows up to court to defend his client with work that I did! lol And, no I'm not really learning anything from this experience...other than, I really don't want to be a lawyer. It's $20 a day I'd get paid. It's in the middle of downtown Chicago, the train ride is $2, and $2 to come back home. Lunch would be like $6ish...so thats around $10 I need to get there. That would leave me with a total of $10...which...is nothing. I would also have to buy more "business clothes" which aren't cheap either. So wtf, I'm losing more. I don't really need to have this on my CV because I wanna be a farmer lol But I feel exploited. When I left, the owner told me "I don't want you to feel exploited, so if you'd like, we'll pay for your expenses to get here." Pfft...to me it suggests that he knows he is doing something wrong. My father owns a restaurant and I work there on sundays...I get paid there more money in tips than I get in the law firm! If I'd work at the restaurant for 5 days full time I'd have about $600 a week. And well...time is money!!! College isn't free...I know enough about law to say the justice system is a disgrace. It's never about justice, its about who has enough money to set the rules. If I had plans to stay in the US, the it would have been nice to have this on a CV. I don't really think a CV from the US would matter to them much. For example, my cousin there is an English teacher, she knows just a few phrases in english and really, no offense to her, but she shouldn't be allowed to teach. Why does she have the job? Because her mother is a principal, and her mother paid $5k to get her a job. So will my CV really matter? Maybe it will...but, like I said. I want to be a farmer.

$20 a day would be well below the legal minimum wage in the UK. That's what they'd have to give you for two hours of work over here.

In a job like that, if you do it properly, you quickly become irreplaceable. And will get decent pay afterall.

I doubt the job is a good one anyway. The floor manager was expressing his "hate" towards it all. Saying that everything was disorganized because people keep leaving so they don't know where all the files/papers are and things like that. I believe him, the day I went I had to organize 200 boxes full of files...so annoying. But I guess that's what they're looking for. He also mentioned that they were looking for more people to work full time and asked me if I knew any. Rather desperate. Heh...It's just not my thing I guess.
But it's too late now. I called this morning and quit. They wanted me to work full time once school starts. And well, lol, when would I get sleep? I don't think you can be a full time student and work 40 hours a week for that kinda pay.

If people keep leaving then I think you are right not to take the job. But you could say that you'd take it for $2,000 a week, see if they take you up on it!
;D
In the UK if an employer paid women less than men for doing the same job they'd be in court and would lose even if they had the expensive lawyers, if they did the same thing due to someones racial background the same thing would happen.
And I thought the US was a civilised country.
What type of farming do you want to do Sol?

I'm not sure what kind of farming. I would like to farm corn only because I think I can use it for many things.
But, I don't want to farm just to mass produce something and sell it. I just want to farm enough to give me a simple lifestyle. I'd like to have lots of fruit trees too. Hehe...silly dreams! sigh
And I think I've spammed this topic!
