I thought it might be worth discussing this in light of the Fishcult vs Loki incident and the fact that I am hoping to colonise a 900 pointer soon.
What rules if any should we have in place?
Thoughts............

For unamed isles, as in most colonising terms, the bigger player will dictate the terms. Most of the time people follow the rule if you clear it, you can take it. I generally ask for proof of clearance, so keep such records.
Of course, I talk of all such things from .co.uk, maybe it will be different in .com. Generally though, clear it take, keep proof. If ignored and smaller, crush. If ignored and bigger, chances are, he's done it to a few people so join up and crush.

Reviving the korak case, for example, I have just sent him a note asking if he went definitively inactive, in which case he will be colonised. If he doesn't reply within (insert answer to my doubt here) I will strike. What would seem proper? 3 days? A week?

I'd say a week is too long, 3 days maybe not quite enough. How about 5?
But I'm talking about unowned islands. So I don't want to send a message to it and wait a week to see it snatched!

For me whoever colonises an isle first gets to keep it. I won't cat an isle from another player and I won't have one catted from me. who cleared it is to a large extent irrelevant, if you can't colo it straight away you shouldnt clear it.

I agree with 2kcastle and that was the etiquette on co.uk I seem to remember.
That's the only way of being sure what's going on, I'm spying on that isle near me constantly now to make sure nobody is taking down the defences, but it's only really viable as it is so close to me.

Hey, I talked about this when I first joined. It's really a big thing on .co.uk. What it talks about are rules, or guidelines to follow, so that people don't loose colo ships, or fleets. The only problem is that it is like communism. It only works if everyone follows, else there will be a lot of colo steeling. Here is the original thread: s13.invisionfree.com/Inselkampf_s1_forum/index.php?showtopic=72

I tend to not send cats against unruled isles for one simple reason; its not required. If someone sends cats against my isle I'll take it back; by sending cats they obviously wanted to steal it off whoever got it. If that person is me they get the conflict they were asking for.
As for clearing an isle... I play by the rules that whoever clears the isle gets it. One follows this as I have a bad track record at colonising (took 12 attempts once on an 8 hour trip).

I agree with 2kcastle and Skulkrin, nobody has any claim to any isle on the map until they have successfully colonised it (slightly different conditions apply during war time).
Unfortunately the general consensus in all other alliances seems to be that an isle somehow belongs to you once you've killed a few spearfighters. This is the basis on which the admin clowns of MX are working, and I can see it causing many more problems in he future—especially when the admins are supposed to be monitoring 100+ members.

The way i used to play it on uk server was:
If you clear the isle before it is unruled, you have no claim over it. If you clear it while its unruled, its yours. If you have no proof, you have no claim, in which case the person who gets there first and builds the main house up, keeps it.

Depends on how many units your looking at, if I lose say 500LW clearing an isle (fair enough .com isn't at this stage yet) I'd definately take it back as I would have a claim. Sometimes I'd even go so low as losing only ~20LW against an isle and still taking it back, depends on its positioning. As for 1LW I expect to lose 6-7LW just taking out the stonewall.

what happens if you colonise an island and someone attacks and takes resources soon after. the attack was clearly sent before you took the island. Do you request for the resources back?

Yes, that's what I think. How are you going to state a claim? Put a notice up on your profile? If there's an empty island that I want to colonise I go for it, I don't bother checking hundreds of profiles in case someone scribbled on there 'xx:xx:xx iz mine'. And attack reports are no proof, as they can be forged easily. You cleared it, so why didn't you take it? Obviously, if a colo attempt is sent after you got the island, then that would count as an attack. Raids sent before you took over are fine. How should the raider know you were about to colonise?

If they sent their collo fleet before you took the isle then the resources they plunder are fair play. But often you will find many players offer to return what they took. Though thats probably only on the uk server as im sure people here dont have enough spare resources to be kind in that way.
