I was trying to work out what which the most efficient defence and attack units were and thought of the following way.
Assume you have lvl 20 production in Gold, Lumber and Stones and disregarding the costs of upgrades
Gold 306 per hour or 5.27 resource per min (rpm) Stones 191 per hour or 3.18 resource per min (rpm) Lumber 230 per hour or 3.83 resource per min (rpm)
using these figures you can work out how much an item will cost in resource production per minute (rpm).
So a Stone thrower gives 10 Att and 10 Def and costs
G - 50 S - 10 L - 0
this equates to
G - 9.49 rpm S - 3.14 rpm L - 0 rpm
A stone thrower costs 12.6 rpm
att/rpm = 0.79 def/rpm = 0.79
whereas a catapult gives 500 Att 250 Def and costs
G - 5000 S - 2500 L - 4000
using the same method
A Catapult costs 2778 rpm
att/rpm = 0.18 def/rpm = 0.09
Not the most cost efficient unit unless occupying a precious slot on board a warship ship
Spear Throwers are the most cost efficient defensive unit
A Spearthrower lvl 10 Spear and Shield costs 26.2 rpm
att/rpm = 0.76 def/rpm = 1.15
and Archers are the most cost effective offensive units
An Archer lvl 10 Bow costs 41.5 rpm
att/rpm = 0.96 def/rpm = 0.48
Incidentally a lvl 20 StoneWall costs 2528 rpm
def/rpm = 1.715

Could you do that formatted in a table please? It would be easier to understand that way I think.
