Look, the scary thing is, that everyone will do it, most of us even want to.

That sounds like a pretty good strategy. Every extra isle you have will be like another suicide bomb though. Also, while colonies are still plentiful, they offer a major resources boost in the long term for not much effort. True, but it's the old "guns vs butter" conundrum. Do you risk expanding quickly but be vulnerable early on and reap the rewards later, or do you go for guns straight away and risk having nowhere to expand (peacefully) later on? If I weren't peaceful then I'd go for a big fleet on my one isle and then steal colonies off other players after they'd developed them for me, but before they had time to defend them properly.

Morkin never "did the arms race" for stealing purposes. We did it for higher morale issues (if that really exists). We took from those that drew first blood. And we made a point when we took it!!!
The great diference between Morkin and the others, is that you'll find suicidal members in our alliance, who will easily (very easily) and willingly throw away everything they have been gathering in one attack, just to make a point.
That dedication and commitment, my friends, is very hard to find!

Bear in mind that if you take no losses colonising an isle then to colonise you would only be 40 LW worse off than before, and with that value you'd still have the same number of spears/stoners as otherwise.
35k gold might seem alot but 5 isles can make such an amount almost obselete alot faster than 1 isle can, if you catch my drift. For example, by colonising 4 isles straight away my main will be temporarily down by say 80 LW compared to 'normal', the cost of 80 LW can easily be pumped back into my main once the colony has full mines and is producing spears. That or you could just count the cost of the coloships as coming from farms. I know that so far I've gained 107081 gold from farms, thats enough to pay for my 3 colonies.

Pardon me, but you actually count the loot over time ?

Yeah, sad isn't it?
I keep a record of when I last farmed isles nearby and thought why shouldn't one also keep a record of what one has actually plundered?
I also have a score record of all isles within one sea of me, all of this is to be blamed on too much spare time.

Well, certainly could be helpful in determining what actions are to be taken. A cost-benifit analysis kind of thing...
