Hmmm... Little something of me... I'm 27 years old, undergraduate (MsSocSc), no kids, propably a girlfriend. My home lies in - now days not so cold North - Helsinki, Finland. I do enjoy nature, fishing, good food, cooking, bad jokes, books and interior design.. Apart from that I spend my spare time renovating my apartment and rumbling around various locations with my bike. At weekends I'm forced to work as a bartender to cover my flats mortage. Which leads to barhopping during the week itself! Whats my style of play? I prefer deterrent to action and defence to score. I hope that my fleet is living up to that expectation. At the moment I have four isles and I'm propably going to take fifth within a week. I love the idea of scorched earth, but there hasn't been incident where I would have been forced to use it, yet. I'm not planning to jump from ocean one to any other (in the near future anyway). Thats me in a nutshell basicly. Any questions? Feel free to ask... Oh yes, the name... Eelis.

I was in Helsinki in 2002 at a conference. Went to this weird Russian restaurant (Zetor I think). I stayed in some guesthouse by the harbour, and had a nice walk in the morning past the splendid buildings towards the university. And there was a trip to Suomenlinna or whatever the name of that island fortress was. Very pleasant place. At least in August

The restaurant is Zetor and it's actually weird Finnish restaurant...! I like Suomenlinna also (I was there just few days ago). It's actually very nice in winter time also, but now there hasn't been any snow during this winter if one can call this that! My flat is in one of those buildings... well almost that is!! Same style, late 19th century, but few blocks from the square...

I used to be a lot around that area, as i lived in Kamppi and also in Punavuori. Once upon a time one could get the most fabulous Kebap from Eerikin Pippuri. One time i actually one ran naked from kamppi to Kolmensepän-statue and back.

I have visited Sveaborg a few times as well some years back. It's always fun to get into a discussion about Carl-Oluf Cronstedt and whatever qualities he may or may not have possesed. He also ties in at the Swedish navy's failure to arrive at Copenhagen to fight the British when they attacked in April 1801. At that time he commanded the Swedish fleet at Karlskrona, and was supposed to have taken Hyde Parker and Nelson in the back while they tried to break the Danish defenses. I bethink that the Brits would have experienced their largest and most humiliating naval defeat ever had he managed to arrive where he was supposed to, as the Brits would have caught between a hammer (the Swedes) and an anvil (the Danish line).

Nobody biting on the "Cronstedt could have beaten Nelson" bait? What a pity

Doesn't merit a response Was your discussion about his navigation qualities? that said if you can't get your ships to turn up on time..... we'd have had a bigger victory to boast about ;D ;D ;D

Well, you can always boast about the 1807 victory, here in the bicentennial year.
No, I know you regard it as a law of Nature that neither Nelson or Wellesey could have been defeated, but Cronstedt really was very, very good.
There are hot discussions both about his inability to make the Swedish fleet on time in 1801, and his surrender of Sveaborg in 1810. Nothing in the rest of the man's history suggest that he is unable, cowardly or treacherous.

Swedes had so many coastal warships that in archipelago they were on strong 'ground', while in the open they were on 'marsh'

Of course Wellington would have lost the Battle of Waterloo, had Blücher not managed to turn up in time with the Prussian army. A fact that he later conveniently ignored.
