So there is this 800+ pointer unruled near me. I spy, and it's got some 450 LWS and 1200 archers etc on it. So it's quite expensive to take.
My question is, is it worth it? I'll probably lose some 600 LWS taking it I'd guess, and then have no troops or ships on that new isle. And that is given no other Scemo! snatches the island once I've cleared it.
What would you do?

Depends on the geography. If it's within 5 nm, I'd take it.

It's 2.1 m from my nearest island.

I don't think its worth it. Points don't really mean much (to me anyway), and I'd rather get an unamed isle and have patience building it, instead of losing 600+ LWS. But that's just me.

I guess it comes down to how much 600 LWS relative to the rest of your fleets. If you're sitting on 20k LWS, I'd say it's worth it. If you're down around 5k, it may not be.
The big advantage of it being built up is the time saved - it can already start pumping out spears and ships, whereas a lesser island can take as long as a week to get to that point - that's a few hundred spears and a few dozen ships you can never get back.

I've got several 500 LWS fleets nearby. They've been built up over about 3 months, and I would probably lose at least one of them.

I lost 700LWS yesterday clearing 2k spears and 200LWS etc for an isle with 5nm. It was worth it xD
Sol convinced me to not go for the other isle that was even closer to me xD

Another factor I'd throw in is the "threat level". If a war seems looming, spending 600 LWS on an isle like that would likely be regretted once the war commences. But if there's peace for the foreseeable future, you'll probably have time to recover the losses.
For instance, I build roughly 175 LWS per day. If war seemed unlikely for at least a week, I'd strongly consider taking the isle, because I could replace the losses (even if they were admittedly dispersed amongst several fleets rather than a single hammer fleet).
I suppose what it really boils down to is just your personal comfortable level, and the style of play you pursue - how aggressive your expansion / local security is.

I just calculated 1:85:17, from what Patton had entered into the DB. He had losses of about 1 million gold to clear the island, which at full production for one single isle takes almost 5 months to recover. Plus you need to build up a few buildings that were destroyed as collateral damage.
Obviously that doesn't set you back 5 months, as with 30 isles you've got 5 days' worth of lost production. Suddenly it doesn't sound that bad anymore. And I build about 280 LWS per day, so losing 500 is only two days. Mmmh...

So, you're looking at losing roughly two-days production, to increase your production capacity by roughly 2% thereafter (assuming you build 5 LWS/day on it). On a long enough time scale, it becomes well worth it. Back to the "Do I anticipate I will need those 600 LWS for something else in the near future?"

Tighten up a train of colo's behind the clearing fleet. If you're going to be around your computer, 48 minutes between them is perfect for having time to upgrade the MH to 2 once you get it. Leave the vultures as small a window-of-opportunity as possible A high-value isle like this one, and I would send a never-ending train of colo's set to hit every 48-50 minutes.

Even better. They're in recall range, so I'll send one every 5-10 minutes. I've got four ships on an isle 1hr away...
Overall I lost 507 LWS, some 2400 spears, and 1 cat.

With 4 colo ships, my public-school education tells me that's a 93.75% chance of success. Assuming it truly is a 50% chance of success on any single attempt... Congratulations are in order
