I know that I wasn't going to add new features, but I am in the code where this would occur anyway at the mo', so it's a very small overhead to include this, and it has been mentioned before.
To sum up: if you run away from a battle then your courage drops by 1.
I don't want to make it more sophisticated than that though.
Yes/no?

No, and a very categorical No at that. Too indiscriminate. How do you tell if someone is "running away"? Just by leaving a battle? Ouch! There are more reasons to "leave a battle" that have nothing to do with running away than I can run through. A battle does not have to be at one location, but can be at many nearby locations at the same time. This would penalise the ability to move armies from one place where the battle may be effectively over, but some opponents remain, to somewhere nearby where those men are more needed. Recently I had a battle where the enemy was wiped out, except for 1 lone lord who had lost his horse. Why would removing my six or sever armies away from there to where they were more needed, or just to rest, be an act of cowardice? As you can see, I am vehemenly against the idea. ;D One thing to consider for the future, as it is slightly more complex, is to evaluate a lord's performance in battle. If his men took, for example, three times as many casualties than they inflicted, or lost more than half their number in one go, then courage could drop by one, or even two. But moving out of an ongoing battle? No, that's just too draconian.

No. I may be acting boldly by suppressing my killer instincts for the sake of my army...

That's the dilemna that I was thinking of too, but wondered whether it might Culo! spice to a game.
The other danger was that enemies would attack your best lords with their weakest, tying you down until you had finished them off for fear of losing your courage status.
I'll leave it for now as I don't have the time to implement the "performance" check that Bill outlines.
