Lazy buggers, those characters and their soldiers. Movement, searching and what-not is for seven hours a day (and a bit more if you handle your lords optimal ) and the occasional night battle, but there should be more than ample time to rest, so to be realistic they should tire much more slowly. That aside, I guess the day is only seven hours long as it's winter solstice and we're far north, like middle Scandinavia or southern Finland at winter. What would happen if we had a war around spring or autumn solstice where the day has twelve hours, or (heaven forbid ) even in the summer where we could get fourteen or sixteen hours of daylight?

Surely if a warriors are too tired to attack properly, they are also too tired to defend properly? I envisage weary and dogged troops desperately heaving their weapons up to shoulder height, or dragging shields to the front with painful slowness... Rather than deadlock, surely such battles would go to the largest army? Exhausted troops should fall ore easily even as they swing weaker.
Seriously, something needs to be done. At least giving them the minimun of strength needed to move one square.

Something funny:
The fresh troops I've brought in a rea taking more casualties than the exhausted ones. It's a long shot, but might there be a reversed value in there somewhere?

I'll take a look. I have a little spare time coming up, so hopefully I can actually do more than a 1/2 hour stretch of changes/bug fixes.

Do you think you could post the complete algorithm somewhere so we can all criticise it?

Do you think you could post the complete algorithm somewhere so we can all criticise it? I would prefer it if J-Y made it available on request, or something similar. Personally, I'd rather not know the exact algorithm, just as I don't want to know the exact movement rates and penalties. I prefer to play M/MU as a wargame rather than a chess game. In fact, if M/MU was my game, I'd probably introduce slight variations in the movement rates, to reflect the mundane accidents that can affect a day's march. Not more than half an hour's effect over the entire day, but it would be enough to spoil the calculations of those who play the game purely by numbers. (Then again, if M/MU was my game it would most likely still be on the drawing board... )

I like that.
How about introducing weather? It would influence moving rate, and how much the troops would tire on the way. Or even troops getting killed if caught by a storm while camping in the wilderness. And then maybe skulkrin could get guidance about approaching storms, seeking at henges.
And another thought: horses of an UE army could start to die, slowly turning cavalry into infantry.

Yes me too, i like varying things and uncertain calculations rather then exact hard figures.
Weather would be very nice.
