I'm not sure what benefit wolves should offer players in MU? Other than dragon food maybe, like the horses!
Any (sensible ;D) suggestions?

Why should they be beneficial to players?
Let them be perils, killing off a few straggling warriors from tired armies and attacking un-armied lords moving through their areas.
Nevermind that real wolves not likely would do that, we are not aiming for realism, and I think some random obstacles could be a good addition to the game.

Wolves are a random obstacle in LOM so why not keep with that. As Natmus says, you would try to avoid them with a single lord without armiers. Could slow the seekers/recruiters down a little...

Flip a coin when a player seeks at wolves. Heads, wolves instantly kill some men (up to 1 man per wolf). Tails, wolves stay loyal to you and will attack enemies on sight. Wolves will attack ANY lone lord on sight without seek.

Oooh. Loyal wolf packs. Nice! Bit of a bummer to implement mind!
Only recruitable by Fey?

I'd change the fairy-thing to boost time, courage and energy by some 3 to 5 steps, instead of upping it completely though.

Oooh. Loyal wolf packs. Nice! Bit of a bummer to implement mind! Only recruitable by Fey? In Warcraft wolfs are ridden by orcs, so the fouls should ride them.. What do you think about Free ride only horses and Fouls only wolfs? What are wild horses for Free that will be wolfs for Fouls? Ok,ok.. i'm just kidding ;D

I'm still firmly in the anti-Tolkien camp on the wolf front. Wolves are sociable, intelligent animals. Animals. Not evil wargs! OK say it together people - "Wolves are friends, not food"! Maybe wolves could provide dwarves with steeds instead?

Dwarves are too heavy to be riding wolves.

Dwarves don't ride. Period. I'm not sure Tolkien had wolves as being particularly evil, but wargs were giant evil wolves IIRC, and they would probably become leaders of wolf packs giving Middle-Earth denizens the impression that all wolves are evil. Peter Jackson took one of his usual liberties turning the wargs into giant hyenas. I do think wolves should be a peril for the unwary solitary traveller, particularly a frightened or tired one. Even for the Wise. Bear in mind that this is Midnight - a land locked in a big freeze where food is scarce. Any wolves you meet are likely to be hungry! I don't much like the idea of having "loyal" wolves, and I really dislike the idea that anyone could recruit them. Yuk! They're animals, after all, not sentient creatures, and I've never been too keen on the idea of turning all living creatures into sentient beings. Make wolves roving if possible, and give them a 50% chance of attacking any lone traveller if within 2 leagues of their position. Should any armies stop within 2 leagues, the wolves should run away. Finally, if anyone actually stops in the same location as the wolves there should be a fight on the basis that the wolves are cornered. As with horses, wolves should provide sustenance for dragons in random quantities and requiring a seek (which in turn may yield nothing if the wolves all run away and the dragon can't catch any).

The voice of reason. Good suggestions, and the hungry wolf point is well made. Making them move may be an issue, as this requires additional SQL calls to check for adjacent locations and who might be there, etc which could slow down processing, but I may give it a go and see if it impacts too badly. It will only happen on seek and end-turn processing, so should be ok.
