It seems that CO Sirrius are very vulnerable to Spirit fighters, over 2/3rds of them got frozen. I had to get out of that fight as we would have lost anyway, sorry to leave you against the odds but I did get over half my force out alive, about 300 fighters.
The big ships did well, they survived much better.

You MUST refine your strategies, especially when defending. There's a huge difference in firing order success from strategy to strategy.

In a ships targetting mode, does it automatically fire first at whatever is there, or can firing opportunities be wasted? An example would help I think: Let's take our faithful friend: FI.3 - Bullet FI - TR - RE In this example, if the enemy consisted of CO FR and RE class ships, would the Bullets first shot automatically be at the RE ships? Or, would be forfeit the advantage by "drawing a blank" (twice) against non-existent CO and TR ships? I hope that you can follow this! Or, is firing order the real process for fine tuning?

You can change in which order it fires when defending - select wanted order from the combo in appropriate row in strategy. Whether it shoots on non-existent ships - I don't know that, to be honest.
Also, it's important which ships fire sooner - I found that if my Spirits freeze some attackers and other ships fire after them results are much better.

So, basically don't assume that the default settings (firing order) are always the best. Targetting is probably only important if there is a choice of enemies and you want to go for a particular class, in line with your overall strategy. In these early days of small - medium ships, your advice about EMP ships is probably the "biggie" IMHO Keep going guys - it's good to share this info

Does it work this way:
Defender FO 1 Attacker FO 1 Defender FO 2 Attacker FO 2 etc.

Basically, if I know exact enemy strength (usually after first tick), I calculate most dangerous class and try to freeze it and target it as soon as possible to neutralize it as much as I can.
I don't bother with classes that cannot harm me - PDSs usually take them down sooner or later.
What I also learned: PDSs are much better for long-term planetary defense than ships. They have considerably stronger armour and inflict much more damage.

We could always ask on the Forum I guess. I did that, but answers were always too general to learn anything. But maybe my English is not good enough. Maybe someone else should check it out on The Nebula?

Better build some offensive towers. Disruptors are useful only against battleships.

Your English is better than many of the students I teach! Is it? I always have a feeling that I'm making a lot of mistakes. Like in this previous sentence, for example.
