We discussed the idea of an increased defensive bonus for dragons and Wise when with an armed escort in another thread in the MU General section, so I won't rehash that idea here.
How about other bonuses though? I'm thinking of perhaps redressing the imbalance between mounted troops and infantry, where at this moment cavalry is always better than infantry.
How about reducing cavalry attack strength against strongholds, and slightly increasing that of infantry? Defensive bonuses when inside an allied cidatel need not be affected. Why? Well, cavalry are virtually useless against walled fortifications, which is where siege engines, artillery and infantry come in handy. We don't have siege engines or artillery, but the infantry could be more effective. This would also give them a tactical edge, rather than just as an inferior unit to cavalry.
I'd also reduce cavalry effectiveness in forest battles, though I would not modify the infantry in any way.
Finally, I'd like to see dwarves get a considerable attack bonus against fortifications. As specialists in stone and earth works, dwarfs should be particularly good at undermining walled defenses. This would increase their tactical value as they would become particularly effective at clearing unguarded (but garrisoned) strongholds or behind the lines striking at resupply points.
I think this would improve tactical options and move us a step away from the recruit->consolitade->attack in force pattern that works best at the moment, without impacting too much on the complexity of control from a player point of view.
What does everyone else think?
(Note: I'm throwing ideas out for discussion, not expecting to see them implemented in the next version or two. This sort of thing increases code complexity and invariably increases the likelyhood of new bugs creeping in.)
