A better way would be simply not to use n squares from the centre, in all directions, as starting places. That would guarantee at least 2n separation between players No it wouldn't. Think about it: split the map into four quadrants, then cut out a circle of radius n from the center. You still have sections of the original quadrants next to each other, and players could still start in adjacent locations. One way to expand on that is to also cut a narrower strip along the borders between the quadrants. To stop this making everything predictable the original quadrant split needs to be done randomly: take a cross, then turn it a random number of degrees between 0-90.

I understood it like this.
*=forbidden _=allowed
n=1
************** *_____**_____* *_____**_____* ************** ************** *_____**_____* *_____**_____* **************
n=2 ************** ************** **___****___** **___****___** ************** ************** ************** ************** **___****___** **___****___** ************** **************
and so on.

in free translation:
"my heart has only one colour, and that is white and blue" -J Pinto, FC Porto midfielder (1988)
"i can only give you a forecast after the game has ended" -JV Pinto, Benfica forward (mid 90's)
"it's the strenght ot tactics versus the tactic of strenght" -Gabriel Alves, narrator
"i am sure the ball went at least 4 meters (>4 yards) inside the goal net" -id.
"i can see a new, modern, beautiful and atmospherical stadium" -id.
"will he shoot with the most handy of his feet?" -id.
"the referee is mr. jones, an engineer..." -id., referring to a referee from England (ENG)
and so on ;D
