Might as well all share any little tricks we know, I suppose we all know them already but no harm putting them down just in case.
1. Make sure you build main house to level 2 at least to prevent colonisations.
2. If an enemy fleet is coming which is easily bigger than the defender (but not got col ships) send it away and then recall when the attack lands. This way you can preserve your fleet and hopefully rebuild it.
You can check the speed of the enemy fleet by clicking on the watch tower, 2kts means its colony ship. Also if you click on the watch tower and the fleet is close, you can see a detailed report on it's composition.
Feel free to add more...........

Adding this here though it's not exactly on-topic....
Gold is the limiting factor in this game, so where should you spend it?
A Cat costs 5000 gold and gives you 500 offence/250 defence.
BUT, for the same money you could buy 4 LWS and 14 archers, with a combined offence of 960, defence of 680.
Or spend it all on 62 spears, defence of 1860 - nearly twice the offensive power that can be purchased for the same money!!!
So is there any real point in having more than 35 cats in a fleet? And are millions of spearmen actually the most cost-effective deterrent, better than big fleets?

Yes.
(in a very Kosh kind of tone...)
Now, who knows what's better: a fleet of 1000 LWs with 5000 archers or a fleet of 1000 LWs with 5000 spears and why ?
Don't tell me, I know the answer, but tell the rest. ;D It's a twofold answer.

Depends who's attacking I guess...

As I understand it, in a battle the defenders attack first, then the attacking fleet survivors attack the defence? So a fleet full of spears would have a high defence against the island's attack and would take fewer losses, leaving more ships to attack the island.
But you have a lower attack score with just spears, so you need a bigger fleet. But then again said fleet will take less losses so that might balance out...
But if spears are cheaper and quicker to build....
My head hurts!!
Archers for suicide strikes. Spears if you want the fleet to survive. Is that right?

The truth points to itself ! ;D
Okay, okay, Ciaran has it completely surrounded, although I'm not yet sure wether it's not so that the attackers attack first and the isle defends (hence archers and stoners are at a disadvantage perhaps) and only then does the remaining force of the isle attack the attackers where a high defensive score indeed saves your fleet more. Either way, spears save more fleet, archers deal out a stronger first blow. But it could be it's the isle's defenders who get the initiative due to the watchtower seeing the attackers....

I just thought battle was decided by the attacker's offensive rating against the defender's defesive rating. Comparing the two ratings (totals of all units involved) and using some algorithm to make a decision based on that, involving some random numbers as well.
