I haven't played DDR for a year or two now, so I'm not sure IIRC how battles work. Even if that is not how I remember, I suggest the following.
A lord under attack can't do anything. It is night for him. But during the night (after battle) he might decide (if he was a coward) to try running away, in random direction, or direction of AI's choice, for a square or two.
The king would never try to run away.
My reason for suggesting it:
In Four Horsemen, I was happy to discover Robert just short of Keep of Blood that I have just recruited. I fiercely attacked him, only to feel an utter fool the following day, when he ran towards Gorgrath to recruit it.
It was a fatal mistake - I lost all chances to expand and am only awaitng for someone to give me the coup de grace.
I believe such a mechanism would make one-on-one games much more playable. You wouldn't have to chase the enemy all over the land with 30+ lords.

Grrowl ;D The tactic workled just fine. I had sent a manless scout ahead and when I saw that both of you would probably bog each other, all I had to do was guess the loser's escape route...

Would love to see the action replay on that one!

But what do you think about my suggestion, that battles are made more DDR-like?

To relaunch:
Although JY already stated that this engine just won't allow it, it would seem fit to enable troop melee for lords, when they are troopless. A clause "turning" lords into troops if they are alone?

I like that idea for dragons, but for single lords it's just unrealistic. They wouldn't stand a chance.
Except if they challanged their enemy to a duel.

But what do you think about my suggestion, that battles are made more DDR-like? I personally like the ability to run away. It adds a little spice - attack now, or try to race enemy to next neutral lord...

Ah, well, that decides it, then.

Ah, well, that decides it, then. No, no, just a comment. If I'm the only one who likes the approach, then it probably needs changing

Just make it an optional parameter when starting a new game.
- Allow retreats - Allow armyless players

Tactical retreat ("honorable retreat" in Grunfs terms, eh, Matija? ;D) is one of any succesful military leader's rightful means of winning a battle. That almost worked for me against Bob... I see no real reason for disallowing retreat, as that would be totally unrealistic. And I agree with JY - that really adds spice to the game!

I did not mean the retreat would be impossible, only that lords themselves would decide (based on their courage?) when to retreat (one move in a random direction during the night), so a courageus lord would fight longer and against greater odds, while a terrified lord might even refuse to enter the battle (like IIRC Morildrane in DDR).
I did, however, suggest that the king could not retreat. The reason for this was to bring the game to a quicker end, if you manage to catch him.

AI deciding instead of player? Hmmm...
If a lord survives a battle you still have the opportunity to take him out of it. If he's been killed, he wouldn't mind anyway ;D.
