A rich lord, who can afford to hire the most expensive artisans... EDIT: See below for a darker field colour.

maybe a more regal shade for the field. one which does not blend so much with the background

I like that shade - old money, no need to be brash with bright colours: Antiochus comes from a long line of aristos who despise the way that the wealthy merchants display their bling!

You could be right. I had set the field when I intended to use a full-colour bird, but then I changed my mind and decided to go for a silver one - and never changed the background.
I'll play about with this a bit more...

great. now blend edges of field and shield... Take it easy... I'm still very much a GIMP novice, you know, in fact I'm very much a novice at using any graphics programs and techniques. ...and I can't draw... :-( Most of the shields could be improved with some very fine detail work, but it will take me some time to discover the "what" and the "how" of everything. In the meanwhile, the roughness of the shields has one great advantage: they can be modified quickly and easily - something I wouldn't be able to do if I spent three or four hours tweaking each one just-so.

I tend to agree with you there. The paler field does give much more of an "old money" feel - and it has the advantage that it doesn't need blending with the edge, as the eye does it for you.

is it the old russian imperial eagle? No, it's a crested golden bird, but don't ask me what species. I had a collection of tatty clip-art examples sitting on one of my backup cds - unusable for normal purposes, but just about OK when cleaned up and used at very small scale. I don't believe any of it is copyrighted. I dug it out when I was looking for the right shape for Natmus' eagle, but I decided against using it there. The Russian Imperial Eagle is a two-headed bird with crowns on both heads, though there is some similarity in the general stance.
