I need to update system messages to refer to something other than Allies, since now I have alliances that refer to other players/their armies.
Is liege the correct term? Liege seems to be applicable to the "master" as well as the "servants", so what is the best way to refer to them?
eg is JeanYves the liege of Myndolus following recruitment, or the other way around?

I think the correct use would be to say "JeanYves is the liege-lord of Myndolus.", as liege does refer to an oath or promise, sort of a patron/client relationship.
Myndolus would call JeanYves "My liege", while JeanYves could call Myndolus anything he liked.
At least, that's my impression, but English is not my primary language.

So JeanYves is the liege lord, and Myndolus the liege?

So JeanYves is the liege lord, and Myndolus the liege? Yes. Or you could call Myndolus JeanYves' vassal or liegeman, or liege subject. Personally I like vassal.

I concur with Mads.
The liege lord would be the overlord, and the vassal the subaltern.

OK, liege and vassal it is. Not sure why I didn't think of vassal myself, but there you go.

Is a recruited lord "vassal of" or "vassal to" a liege lord?
