Or take him on one-on-one when he is unfortunate enough to be hanging in your neighbourhood without a liege lord in coo-ee. ;D

First thing you do each turn should be to check your Strongholds button. This feature will tell you if any of your garrisoned strongholds, even the unmanned ones, are being taken over by an opponent. Easy way to keep track of opponents' aggresive movements, even if you can't see them directly.
Correction: You do need to have at least one soldier in the garrison for the attack notice to be given. Otherwise an opponent can simply move into the stronghold and garrison it.

Make sure you have enough men for your king. If staging at a Citadel it's probably a good idea to make sure the local garrison is the same race as your king.
There is a bit of a shortage of Fey, and I don't know how Ringthane manages to stay alive being Targ.

Me and Queex.
I get rid of all the warriors and run around recruiting people until I find the next Targ, or all. Then, one in every three of my cities is Targ. Sometimes I go back for the dropped warriors with the other Targ.
It's not so hard after 30 games ;D

If you start loosing a game, play your turn only every week or two, so your opponents completely forget what it was all about.

Put your King on a Citadel, waiting for ten turns until all your enemies come hunting him with only three or four armies. Man all the nearby keeps (works superbly on the plains of blood) with full garrisons and lonely armyless lords. Take the garrisons when the enemy goes for your king. Panic will sprout like moss among your enemies... unless they came with ten armies themselves

A new tip - actually a fudge to get around an existing bug (resolved for next release):
At the moment, you will have noticed that riders and warriors at citadels regenerate, starting at Utterly Exhausted. Actually, if you leave 1 rider and 1 warrior in the citadel, ensuring that they are invigorated, the new troops are generated at *their* energy.
The bug stems from me setting strength to zero if riders = 0 or warriors = 0 (respectively!). So *always* leave at least one of each unit type at the citadels (unless it's a dwarf citadel, in which case you can't leave riders!)
But remember, if you leave only 1 rider and the citadel is attacked, that rider will be lost and the riders will regenerate from Utterly Exhausted.
And also remember that completely empty citadels don't regenerate at all.
