Unit production recommendation

So currently I've been going for a 10:1 ratio of spearfighters to large warships. Has anybody worked out the math on what the optimal ratio is?

Also, anybody have an idea exactly how attack/defense comes into play when attacking or defending an island? I have this thumb of rule that identical units essentially cancel each other out, with the remaining units then coming into play, but I have no idea how accurate this is.

ooo...now this is a lengthy discussion. I'm not good at it, but eproxy should provide some good points (as will others I'm sure).

I do 1:10 as well. When I send all my ships out I still have a sizable amount of spears for defence.

On the downside, that's a bit of a problem if you want to do a fleet-save, as your fleet isn't big enough to carry/rescue all those spears.

Well, I'm aware that XXL lets you autoqueue stuff, but I'm a cheap Bastardo! and refuse to get it.

And to be honest, I don't really take Inselkampf seriously enough to consider spending money on it.

Don't worry, I don't have XXL either. I've time enough to do things myself

And I basically have spears constantly on the go with the remaining being pumped into LWs. Don't know how the ratio works out. Occasionally I'll feel low on cats and build them instead though.

46 Spears to 4 Large Warships is a good ration to stick to.
