Remember my other advice about not bringing any merchantmen to strip your new colony, but instead to preposition a few supplies just ahead of the colony ship.

So - you send transports ahead, drop off some supplies *just* before the colony attempt, is that right?

Yes, just 500 of each sort to get building underway.

whats going wrong 5 failed colony attempts on a island with level 1 main house but level 13 gold mine.level 14 stone, level 14 lumber level 5 store no wall and no defenders.
attacking with 30 large warships full of archers and spearmen, 1 colony ship.
i suffer no losses and rob about 600 of each resource at each attempt.
And no i am not telling where it is ;D

If there still is a ruler of the isle, you can't colonise it. Only isles that no longer have a ruler can be colonised. Maybe that's it? If there is no ruler, active or inactive, you are simply having a long streak of bad luck...

But does the isle have a ruler? It doesn't matter if the isle is active or not, but if there is a nominal ruler.

I'm ready to go for my first colony, how would you recommend selecting one? Reading the previous posts, I can't go for one that already has a ruler, even if it's at score 1. Does that mean I have to go for another persons colony? If so do I run the chance of upsetting another alliance?

If you are online late Sunday nights then I recommend trying for a "tsunami" isle. These are isles where the owner has left the game and can be spotted as they wont have a ruler listed. If you like I can help find one near your main isle. You need a colony ship (duh!) and a reasonable offensive force as these tsunami isles can sometimes be quite well defended. Also I recommend having some merchants to help get your new colony built up by shipping over resources. Finally stonethrowers are handy to help defend the new isle. When you spot a suitable target, scout it so you know what you are up against and then send catapults to knock the main house down to level 1. Send as big a force as you can to do this to minimise your own losses. (assuming the isle is fairly close to you then you wont end up attacking another player in this phase). Next send your colony ship with moderate forces but no catapults. This is the unwritten rule of IK as it means whoever colonises the isle first will get it and not lose a colony ship if someone else comes along later with cats. There's also an unwritten rule that newly taken colonies don't have stoners placed on them for defence for a reasonable period of time, to give incoming colony ships chance to arrive and then clear off again without the chance of them being destroyed. So if your colony attempt is successful, build the main house to level 2 and you are safe, assuming the other people attempting to colonise dont bring cats. You want to put resources onto the isle asap, in fact you can even put the resources on there before your colony ship arrives if you want, you might lose them if someone beats you to the colonisation but we're only talking small beer. I think that just about covers it Good luck! Sounds difficult, but it's not - I've gained 5 colonies this way and never really had any problems, the hard part is keeping the new colony once you've build it up a bit and it becomes more tempting to big players - I recommend the stone wall is increased asap and you stuff a few thousand stoners on it, if you want some I can send a few hundred or possibly more. Questions?

Oh, the tsunami isn't at a set time, but I find it's usually around 9-10pm Sunday evenings.

Also, scout your immidiate area for possible targets, so you don't waste valuable time checking all isles. Just have a list of those isles within range that look like likely inactives, and check those every half hour.
