Latest:
Concentrating on building Frigates now (especially Thor class) and researching Destroyers, bigger ships appear to be more worthwhile if damage isn't persistent.

I've given about 10% of my fleet to The Midnight Fleet and will contribute similar amounts to any fleets from other quads which I think need boosting, once the admirals are sorted out! Then the bulk of what's left goes to The Mighty 6th Fleet!

Over the next few days I will be recalling the fleets and transferring ships so I have all ship types in their own fleet to take advantage of the firing order "loophole".
It will take a day or two to organise, then we will be ready for action!

I'm now building all the above ship types, each planet specialising in one ship type. Any spare capacity is going on Hawk Frigates, Bullet fighters and corvettes mainly.

I'm considering a new ship building strategy:
Damocles BA Crusader CO Crusader CR Gamma DE Venom FI Dragon FL Thor FR
The idea is by building the above you can win any battle. Each of the above is the best ship in it's class which can target other ships from the same class. Sof all you need to do is make sure that you outnumber the enemy ships in each class with the ships above and you will win everytime.
Not as efficient as the best strategies maybe but it is easier to understand and set up orders for etc.

Ground forces so far:
Assault Tank (RL-TA-ME) 428 Cyborg Soldier (CY-PDS-TA) 3094 Mechanised Assault Vehicle (PDS-ME-RL) 106 Mobile Rocket Launcher (TA-CY-PDS) 118
plus, I'm building supporting transporter fleet. How many TR.1s should suffice? 1k? Less?
I'm quickly getting closer to 60% of Wimps score, so I will have to re-buy M6F later today off Robert. That should raise my score for ~4M. Since Robert is absent, who will babysit his account and sell those ships to me? This evening.

I just targetted another planet for colonisation, 1.2.2.13 - a neutral planet, I'm going to make this into a weapons factory to try Ravens method of making cash!

Go for TR2s if you can, as for how many: Starshatter took a planet with around 1800 ships using 200 TR1s - so roughly you could take a planet with 10k ships with a force of less than 1k TR1s, of course it depends on the exact make-up of the defender etc. 1k is a nice round figure to aim for though! ;D
