We are at DEFCON 4
Calming things down after LaT.
Note to administrators or armirals: please update the above line and the subject. For all those who were as puzzled as myself when reading that we were at DEFCON 4 (some games convention? was my first thought), here's a list from www.fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/c3i/defcon.htm :

I think DEFCON 4 is appropriate (since I put it up). Hunting multis is mainly a way to pass the time. Apart from the constant threat from avinalaff and the dealings Ashimar has with Sohei and that other guy, this is as close to peace as we come.

I agree with DEFCON 4. Now how does that influence our actions? Build more troops and ships? Concentrate on getting walls up? Give weaker players the resources to do those things? Administrative guidance welcome!

Well, I'm clearly not building a colony right now because I feel unsafe. So, yes, most of what I produce is ships+troops, with the odd structures per day as far as it doesn't stop my non stop troop/ship production.
I'm still monitoring Archibald's isle and up his wall (now level 10) whenever I can, also working towards archers there. Obviously no raiding anymore in that area. Although I myself am still going strong with that.
I have set the goal to have at least 1000 spearfighters at home. And 500 small warships. With archers.
Low score, big army. That sort of thing. If that's not defcon 2 to you, what is ?
Frei pointed out to me in Perun's housethread that some of us have fleets that can put major holes in islands after I said our defenses still suck big time. Problem is: in case of a first strike attack on us, we don't have islands anymore. What good is the fleet then ? Some short time ability to strike back against superior defenses most likely. Therefore my perhaps pessimistic idea is that we are still WAY OFF hitting peple of Avinalaff's size. How frustrating that may be.

Like it says (an how I interpret it): increased intelligence: Increase diplomatic efforts; spy and maintain a historical account of suspicious accounts and on enemy islands. strengthened security measures: Develop diplomatic contacts which will back us up in future wars (make good friends with our enemy´s enemy); build walls and watchtowers; concentrate on shield and spear research; train more spearmen than archers or catapults.

Problem is: in case of a sudden attack, we don't have islands anymore. What good is the fleet then ? Some short time ability to strike back against superior defenses most likely. With watch tower 20 you should see an incoming fleet about 9hrs before they strike. Assuming you haven't just sent your fleets on long-distance raids that should give you some time to retaliate and ferry away your gold to a safe place. However, it's different with colonies: if a colony falls, its fleet belongs to the coloniser, so unless one can attack one's own island the fleet would be lost. So I recommend that large war fleets should predominantly be built on the home island, or a very well defended colony.

DEFCON was the term used during the cold war, coined by the US I believe.
The warame "Theatre Europe" included it as a method of measuring how likely/imminent nuclear war was.

Who changes the DEFCON status? Administrators, Admirals, Diplomats? Whoever does so, please update this thread, as it might be easier to do than with the news if no forum admin is there. Also, a brief summary in the first post would be useful to assess when the level can be changed.

I put the DEFCON condition there so it's easy accessible for every visitor, even if the reason is visible too. We could remove the reason, but keep the DEFCON info. I think it's a good idea that it's one of the first things people see when they come here (that's why I put it there ). Anyone will react to a DEFCON 1 or 2, instead of looking through less important posts about trade routes or something.

That's why I put it into the subject line of this thread, and the reason into the first post. I was just thinking of the next best way of making it easily accessible. If it's 3 or lower we should also have it as an announcement on the IK forum. So much for the technical bit of displaying it, but who makes the decision what the current level is?
